Stade Ibn Batutta, also known as the Grand Stade de Tanger, is named after one of history’s most famous explorers, Ibn Battuta. Born in Tangier in the 14th century, he traveled across the Islamic world, from North Africa to China. His name symbolically links the stadium to the city’s rich history and global legacy.
With a capacity of 65,000 spectators, it ranks among the largest stadiums in Morocco. Construction began in 2002, and after several delays, the venue officially opened on April 26, 2011. Between 2020 and 2023, it underwent an extensive renovation that not only increased its capacity but also modernized its facilities and infrastructure to meet international standards.
Since then, the Stade Ibn Batutta has hosted a number of prestigious events, including the Spanish Super Cup (Supercopa de España) in 2018, where Real Madrid and Barcelona faced off, and matches during the FIFA Club World Cup 2022.

Accessibility
Although Stade Ibn Batutta is located just outside Tangier’s city center, it is well connected to both the city and surrounding areas. Thanks to its proximity to major roads, the modern Tanger-Ville train station and recent improvements to public transport, both local and international visitors can easily reach the venue.
Train
Tanger-Ville Station, the city’s main railway hub, is located about 10 kilometers from the stadium. Operated by ONCF, Tangier is connected by train to Rabat, Casablanca, Fès and Oujda. The Al Boraq high-speed train makes travel to northern Morocco fast and efficient. From the station, a short taxi or bus ride (10–15 minutes) will get you directly to the stadium.
Bus
Since June 2024, a special bus line has been running between Ibn Batutta Airport, the city center and the stadium. The fare is 40 MAD per trip and the journey takes about 40 minutes. Travelers arriving from Tanger-Med Port can take the ALSA bus to the Tanger railway station (Gare Ferroviaire). That trip takes around one hour, with ticket prices ranging between 60 and 82 MAD.
Taxi
From Tangier’s city center, you can reach Stade Ibn Batutta in just 8 minutes by petit taxi. Fares usually range between 50 and 65 MAD.
If you’re coming from farther away, a grand taxi is an excellent alternative, ideal for longer routes or shared travel between nearby towns.
