The difference between this ball and previous Adidas ball is that the Teamgeist has only 14 curved panels, whereas all previous balls had 32 curved panels. It is claimed that the Teamgeist is therefore rounder and performs consistently in various situations, regardless of where the ball is struck. Additionally, this ball is said to be nearly waterproof.

However, in 2008, it was the first time that Adidas designed a different ball for the Africa Cup than for the Euros 2008. The official ball for the 2008 Africa Cup is the Wawa Aba. The design colors are inspired by the three colors of the Ghanaian flag (red, yellow and green). In Akan culture in West-Africa, the name ‘Wawa Aba’ symbolizes sustainability.

The design of the Jabulani Angola is very similar to the Adidas Jabulani, which was used at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The difference lies in the colors. The colors used for the Jabulani Angola are yellow, red and black, which are also the colors of the Angolan flag.

The design is based, not only on traditional Ndebele print art, but also on the dominant colors of most African flags. The name ‘Katlego’ means succes in the South Sotho language, which is one of the eleven official languages in South Africa. The name was ultimately chosen through a voting process, receiving the most votes. The other two options were Khanya (meaning light) and Motswako (meaning mixture).

The Marhaba ball is based on the Brazuca ball, which was used during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
